Why employees quit—and how to retain them

Building a safe workplace for everyone

The need for great managers and psychological safety is only becoming more critical. Why? Companies aren’t just looking to retain top talent—they’re also hiring in record numbers. According to The 2021 People Management Report, 73% of companies are currently hiring or growing.

Try for yourself: Curious which industries are doing the most hiring, and which are doing the least? Drag the icon for each industry from high to low frequency in the interactive below.

Further complicating matters is the rise of hybrid work. According to the report, 60% of employees currently work onsite, but only 49% of employees actually want to. Also consider that 68% of companies plan to have hybrid teams moving forward, and it’s clear this new way of work is here to stay.

As shown in the chart below, 46% of companies are adopting fully remote or hybrid (i.e., partially remote) policies moving forward.

As the nature of work evolves, so does the nature of employee engagement. Workplace flexibility is no longer a nice “perk”; it’s a necessity. To attract and retain top talent, it’s important to let your people work how they want to work—whether that’s fully on-site, fully remote, or something in between.
